How much solar electricity will a 1.5kW solar photovoltaic system provide? Facing north, it will provide about 6kWh of solar electricity a day averaged over the year – more in summer. A west facing solar electric system provides a little less electricity. Excess solar electricity produced in the daytime is sold to your electricity retailer, for 60 cents a kilowatt hour (kWh). At night you draw power from the grid at your current electricity tariff. The solar electric system may pay for itself after 4 years. Larger solar PV systems are also available. How does cool roofing help? Cool roofing paint keeps an insulated house about 6o cooler in summer. An un-insulated building can be 15oC cooler. A metal roof or one painted a dark colour may heat up to 109oC in summer: the roof space becomes like an oven, and solar photovoltaic cells cannot work efficiently at such high temperatures.
Cool roofing paints, available in cool colours, can repel infra red solar radiation before it has a chance to heat your roof. They can be used on metal, Colorbond or tiles. In winter, cool roofing paints don’t make the house cold. In summer they can make your solar electric system more efficient, air conditioning unnecessary, and prevent the “heat island effect” in cities.
Solar hot water can save tonnes of greenhouse gas, especially if you previously had an electric hot water system. Our local solar hot water and electricity installers are among the most experienced in Victoria. With solar electricity, solar hot water and cool roofing you can cut energy costs and greenhouse emissions by three quarters and feel more comfortable.
